Car-less again :(

Yup, that's me back to the old bicycle again. Typical, the kids have just gone back to school and the first thing the girls bring home is a permission slip for multi sports (wtf?) after school on Thursdays. Let's just hope the weather holds out for the next couple of Thursdays because I'll be cycling in to meet them and then walking them home. Before anyone asks, no I can't borrow Hubby's car. That doesn't have an MOT either, but at least it has an engine now. I could put mine in for MOT, but that would cost £55 which A: I don't have and B: Is more than the flippin car is worth!

Oh well! Looks like I'm going to get fit. smile_teeth

Mind you, if I need to go into town for anything I'll have to catch the bus and that's a game and a half I can tell you....smile_eyeroll

If the rain holds off I'll be fine, mind you I could always invest in one of those rather fetching rain poncho thingies... lol

Oh Sh1t!!!

Yup, shit, shite and buggrit!

Why?

Hubby's car has died suddenly, it is officially buggered. It needs a new engine.

My car as it was so nicely put today... Has more bangs and rattles than a percussion section.

Buggrit!

Actually, Hubby made a very good point today...

They say that money can't buy you happiness, but every problem we've had over the last couple of years would have been easily solved with money.

Rainy Saturday :(

Now, I love living in Caithness, but it rains here as much as it does in Ireland and that takes some doing! Well, as I'm stuck in watching the rain, I shall update my blog for your perusal and obvious pleasure.

The Adolf kitten made his first kill the yesterday.

DSCF1694

He stalked the large feathered creature for a while before pouncing and dispatching it with no mercy whatsoever!

DSCF1697

Doesn't he look proud!

Also in yesterday's news...

We went out to take some photos and look for "Groatie buckies". We took plenty of photos and even found a courting couple in the long DSCF1725grass (laugh? I nearly peed meself!), but the groatie buckies avoided capture once again. We had a good nosey around the old Freswick church/chapel while we were out. That place fascinates me because everything still seems to be in there, it's like they locked up after Sunday service one week and just forgot to go back! DSCF1718

We found something we hadn't noticed before as well. If you go around to the back, you can see into the hallway and lo and behold! What did we find there?...........

Tada!!!

DSCF1739I wonder if it still plays?

Have you seen Deirdre?

Deirdre Jacob disappeared 10 years ago this year. Her parents and younger sister have managed to keep their hope alive for all this time. They have spent 10 years scanning every crowd, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. A moment of hope every time they see someone in the street who looks like her.

My parents and I used to live in an old farmhouse which belonged to their family. I babysat the girls, I made snowmen with them. I find it hard to grasp the fact that she just disappeared. I mean... She is somewhere and someone must know where....

Aaaargh!!! Midgies!!!

Today we have been prisoners in our own home. The midgies have been out in force! According to the midge forecast, we have a negligible risk of midgies today. They obviously didn't tell the midgies that!

A couple of months ago, I invested in a net thingummy for the front door. To try and stop the little beggars, or at least slow them down a bit. I tried to get hubby to help me fit it..... Well, to cut a long story short, we ended up doing an emergency fitting today, whilst being swarmed and eaten alive! A couple of hours later we were standing behind our newly fitted midge net thingummy, watching them land on it and then crawl in through the tiny holes. Aaaaaargh!!

I think I've cracked it now. I've sprayed the net with Vapona fly spray and DEET. So, next time I look out one of two things will have happened.

  1. The midgies that haven't been cruelly assassinated by the Vapona will have been repelled by the DEET and I can stand there and smoke my cigarette in peace.
  2. The chemical cocktail I've sprayed onto the net will have vaporised/disintegrated it and those midgies which aren't rolling around he floor laughing, will launch a revenge attack on me.

Bloody midgies!!

Kitten Update!

Just in case anyone cares, I thought I'd better provide a kitten update.

They're still kittens!! Yes, I know! Amazing isn't it?!

Right, first off I suppose I'd better add all the information, so you know what the hell I'm talking about. The cat had kittens (but you'd know that if you'd been paying attention), the grey one was female the other two weren't...

This is the grey one, it is female, it is now gone.

Apparently we made the woman's day/week/month because she's been looking for a grey kitten for months, she's always had grey kittens and in fact she shows them. So in theory, this cute little specimen has gone off to seek fame and fortune and possibly the odd mouse as well.

That leaves the other two. Quite literally in fact. THEY'RE STILL HERE!!! Is it because they is black? (snigger). I mean, what's wrong with this face?

I mean yeah, ok, he does look a bit like The laughing cavalier, but surely that just adds to his charm and cuteness? Apparently not! It's starting to look like we're stuck with him, but worry not! I have a cunning plan (I'll explain in a bit). Anyway, back to the cute kitties.

Last but not least we have exhibit 3 M'Lud. The very picture of DSCF1267cuteness (I like this one, can ya tell?)

Unfortunately, he does tend to look a bit startled in photos (like you hadn't noticed!)

But. tis ok! I have another photo of him....

DSCF1369

No! We do not keep him in drawer!

Right, back to that cunning plan I mentioned..

We have visitors coming, two lots of visitors as it happens, now surely they won't be able to resist all that kitty cuteness and they'll be overcome by the urge to take a kitten home with them, won't they?

In case you hadn't noticed, there is now a PayPal button top right of this blog, you're penance for laughing at my problems is to donate to the "Buying cat food and fixing the crap motor fund". Mwuhahahahaha *ahem* I mean.... Pretty please?

My car is poorly(er)

Every time I get in that poor old thing lately to go to the shop, it sounds like it's shaking itself apart! Slammed the boot on day a couple of months ago and lost a lump out of the offside wing. On a cold start, it struggles to keep going (bless it). The fuel economy is now non existent. A couple of trips into Wick can take quarter of a tank if that's the kind of mood the car's in. Problem is I just can't afford another one. When that one pops it's clogs I'll be stuffed. For someone who lives 12 miles out of town that's a scary prospect!

I need to think up some sort of gimmick, like that guy in America who started off with a red paperclip and kept trading up until he got a house. Hmm.... Ideas on a postcard please...

Or you could always donate to the cause... I have PayPal!! smile_teeth

Married life

For those who seem to feel an irresistible urge to ask 'How's married life?'

After 4 years, the highlight of my day is one of those conversations. They start with OH entering the room muttering. Nine times out of ten it's because he can't find something.

'I can't find my (could be anything)!'

'Have you looked (insert sensible place to look)?'

'Of course I have, it's not there!'

'Would you like me to have a look?'

'It's NOT there, you'll be wasting your time!'

So off I go to have a look, move some things and Hey Presto! I find the missing object.

'Where did you find it?'

'Exactly where I told you to look'

'You can't have done, I looked there!'

There was a good example of this type of conversation today.

He walked and asked me if the old Flymo has a grass box, I said yes it does.

He walked in an hour or so later, snorted and announced that not only does it not have a grass box, it doesn't even have a place to put one.

I told him he was wrong, he disagreed, I told him that I would prove it and that then he would owe me a cuppa. He said I'd be making my own cuppa.

I led him out to the garage, walked over to the Flymo (complete with grass box) lifted the lid off the grass box and asked 'If that's not a grass box, what is it?

He spent the next hour muttering about how he doesn't know about crappy girly mowers, he only knows about proper mowers.

I got my cuppa though :)

Bloggety blog

I haven't blogged for a while, partly due to the ineptitude of BT broadband and partly due to my laptop, which decided not to boot one morning. This resulted in a lovely conversation with a 12 year old spotty 'team leader' in Tesco, followed by an infuriating conversation with HP technical support.

So, what seems to be the problem, madam?

There's no 'seems' to it, it won't work. I get the post screen and then nothing.

The post screen?

Yes, the bios post screen.

Does it show any windows boot screen at all?

No, I just told you it doesn't. Put your script down and listen.

I want you to take out the battery, plug in the charger and...

...It's not a power issue, the battery is fine, the charger is fine.

Yes, but we need to work through...

...The script? I don't want to play that game. The problem is with the boot sector.

The boot sector?

Yes.

Ummmm....

Can I please speak to someone who has technical knowledge and not just a screen with Yes/No tick boxes?

Ummm... I'll call you back in an hour, is that ok? I need to speak to my supervisor.

He didn't call.... I don't think he loves me any more....

I spent half an hour on my big, scary, not often used computer. Downloaded a bootable program, fixed the boot sector and was then able to use the HP recovery disks, ok it put the laptop back to 'factory settings', which in English means I lost all my stuff (except I didn't cos it was all backed up).

Hey Presto! All fixed!!

The following day I had a call from wotsisface at HP (who incidentally sounded just like Borat)

I'm glad I don't work your hours mate!

Pardon??

I said, I'm glad...... never mind. What can I do ya for? (This started another round of pardons and never minds)

I am calling about the problem with your laptop.

There is no problem with my laptop. I fixed it, no thanks to you. I found a bootable program which would allow me to completely clear the boot sector, then I could run my recovery disks. Incidentally, did you know that those recovery disks will run fine with a good boot sector or with it cleared, but they're naff all use if your boot sector is corrupted.

Boot sector? what is naff, sorry? It's fixed now you say? Can I close the query?

Yes dear, you can tick the box that says you sorted my problem, the one which adds to the wonderful stats for your service.

Pardon?

Never mind.....

BT was either less or more fun, depending on your point of view. Our local exchange was upgraded to ADSL max recently. We were still on the old exchange activate 512mb connection, so I called them to ask if they would switch us over. I got through to BT Delhi (or whatever) who told me that I was already on ADSL max (No I'm not. Yes you are) Well, you must be, there isn't anything else. Yes there is, I'm on it. I spent a month arguing this with them, they would log our slow speeds as a fault, even though I told them not to, an engineer would check it again, then say that we would get billed for calling them out again, to which I would say 'Bollocks, I will. I didn't call you out'

Now you might say, that this was my own fault for calling the faults department. I didn't. It didn't matter which number I called, they would inevitably put me through to broadband tech support, who would then log it as a fault, no matter how many times I told them not to.

I gave in after weeks of running around in circles. I called Ofcom, told them my tale of woe and was given a special number for BT and an Ofcom reference number. Wow!! It's like ringing the BT batphone. Your call is answered by people for whom English is their first language, this is the fix it because you've complained mob and Oh my God, they're good! We were assigned our personal superwoman, with access to all departments, no script and most importantly... motivation and initiative! So, they finally hooked us up to ADSL max and guess what? It didn't work!! Bugger! Oh well we thought, never mind and they plugged us back in to our 576 down and 64/96 up (it varies).

Now the annoying bit! Our neighbour (not at all computer literate and to be honest, would be fine with dial up) who lives in the nearest house to us (100 yards) had broadband installed. His ADSL max connection connected at 1.5 meg. Now if that 100 yards up the road meant his line was 100 yards shorter it wouldn't be so bad, but not only does the line take the scenic route to get to us, but it runs straight past his house to us, then his line is connected outside our house and runs back up the road to him. So his line is in fact 200 yards longer. Will BT change us to a different pair of wires? Will they hell! Apparently, as long as it's good enough for calls, then it's tough! But it isn't good enough for calls! I've spent many an hour on that phone shouting down it at people and trying to get them to shout back. Conversations mainly consisting of 'Eh? Pardon? Could you speak up a bit?' You can't plug a modem into it to get a dial-up connection either. The line's too crap for that! I've given up, I use my mobile for everything now and if the landline rings I quite often ignore it, because I just can't face standing there with my finger jammed in my other ear, shouting and yelling into the receiver.

Ok rant over... for now.

Here's a pretty picture to sooth after all that ranting.

My Mum has a head like a football

Well... That's not entirely true, but she did when she woke up on Monday morning! I'll explain:

Over the weekend, she was complaining that her legs hurt, not her hip, which she has seen the doctor about. The bottom of her legs. I said "You should tell the Doctor about that, he could probably sort it". She gave me the sort of look which is usually reserved for child murderers! By Sunday evening, she was announcing that she'd had enough and wished it would all end.

On Monday morning, she woke up looking like the Elephant man. 'Strange' I thought to myself, what the hell's caused that? Well it turns out that all the complaining about her legs etc over the weekend translates as "I have toothache!"

We called the doctor out and she swiftly announced that she's not 'authorised' to treat dental problems and that Mum should see a dentist, at which point I exited stage left rather rapidly because Mum has the WORST dental phobia I have ever seen. She hasn't seen a dentist since 1982! I've been nagging her for years that she needed to see a dentist, her teeth are shocking! I've been telling her for years to go and see a dentist who is good with phobias, or to see the doctor about something to calm her down so she can go. She wouldn't and she told basically told me to mind my own business. I warned her something like this would happen, which of course is why she claimed that it was her legs hurting over the weekend.

Anyway! She has an appointment with the dentist at the hospital today and the doctor has given her some Diazepam to take beforehand. This should be interesting. The dentist told me on the phone that she might need to go to Raigmore to be treated as she is an anaesthetic risk, so she is currently sitting in bed pouting and complaining that Raigmore is too hot and the food's no good. Eye-rolling

If I'm perfectly honest, it would be nice for me if she had a little stay in Raigmore as I don't get any respite. Unfortunately, my luck doesn't run that way, so she'll probably get sent down there for one or two days which means I'll spend all my time driving down and back and I wouldn't be surprised if a major component falls off my car just for good measure!

Kittens!!

Oops! I can't believe I forgot to mention the kittens. smile_embaressed

Domino has given birth to three squeaky wriggly kittens. Yay!!

They're all healthy and I haven't looked to see what sex they are yet.

Hubby's travels

He's at it again, wandering about with his rucksack on. This time he's walking just over half of the West Highland Way and then possibly continuing along the Great Glen Way.

I dropped him off at Inverarnan yesterday at about 5pm. I don't think he walked much last night, just settled down in his tent to get a good kip before he started. Anyway, he's done 20 miles so far (not bad for an old fart, eh?)

Mr Puffin and the Sunset

Sounds like a children's book doesn't it? HappyI went up to Duncansby head with the kids yesterday, we've DSCF0100discovered a new beach so we went there first and I sat watching the Fulmars drop shellfish on the rocks while the kids played in the sand dunes. I took a few photos, but nothing I'm that pleased with. When we moved on up to Duncansby head itself, we headed straight for the geo where all the birds nest. It's manic, like a council estate for those of the feathered persuasion!

DSCF0138Anyway, we were puffin spotting, I stood there for ages and didn't see any puffins, as soon as I turned away Rachel shouted "There's one!" It took me a couple of minutes to figure out where she was pointing, but she was right.

I was sat in the kitchen looking out at the sunset last night for a while before I gave and went out to try and get a photo of it. I've tried it before and the results have been crap. I'm obviously getting better though (a bit anyway) cos I took these Big Grin

Oops!!

Our Domino is pregnant again!

Honestly, that cat is such a tart! My fault really. No! I don't mean I got her up the duff you numpty! I mean that I was supposed to get her fixed, I just kept forgetting. Let's see if I can remember after this lot eh? With any luck she's been off playing hide the sausage with the big grey fluffy tom again. Her last kitten was gorgeous (Pyewacket). PyewacketAt least if they look like that, they should be easy to home. I'll try to remember to post pics of the kittens when they're born, provided she doesn't get out and give birth somewhere we can't find them of course. I'm expecting the  patter of tiny paws any day now...

Wednesday...

What is it about Wednesdays? They really are rubbish. Well, mine are anyway. Can't be arsed is the order of the day (even more than other days!). It was worse today because it was a gorgeous day, I was sat looking out at it all afternoon thinking that I really should get outside, getting dressed didn't happen again today either. It's my dressing gown's fault, it's far too comfy!

Hubby and the kids went off to Dunnet beach and ran up and down the sand dunes. Tired me out just thinking about it. I was going to walk Zander down to the harbour, I had every intention of going and then it was too late and I hadn't managed to shift myself.

Anyway, we had a phone call today about the kidnapped dishwasher, it was showing up on their system as unfinished business or something. Apparently (allegedly) they're going to chase it up and if it can't be fixed soon they'll give us a new one. Hmmm.... We'll see! I refuse to get my hopes up on that one.

I have another blog now too, I don't know whether to duplicate everything or what to do , I only got the other one because I can send to it straight from my phone (a rather spangly and posh N95, but I don't like to brag... much) although typing up a blog on my phone is a pain compared to just typing it on here.  The other blog is here, it's even got a nice smiley (well, almost) picture of me on it. Just what you've always wanted.

We're waiting with baited breath (sort of) for BT to upgrade the broadband at our local exchange, at the moment it's on the exchange activate scheme, which means that our top speed is 512Kbps. They're upgrading it to full platform ADSL, so we might get 2meg out of it when they're finished! It's amazing how excited I get about that, when you consider that before we moved here we had an 8meg connection. Anyway, there were 2 Open reach vans parked up outside the exchange the other day, so we got all excited thinking that our speed increase was imminent, then the broadband went off. Aaargh!! That meant a few hours of Solitaire and Mahjong. Well, it was either that or talk to each other... ;) Turned out that whatever it was they'd done down there, our binatone router now can't connect, so we've had to go back to the BT home hub. No speed increase so far, in fact our upstream speed is now only 96Kbps. :(

16042008092Anyway, here's a picture that Hubby took today on Dunnet beach. Those tiny stick people are the kids. :)

Yay!! Hubby fixed the hole in the ceiling!

Months ago (sometime last winter) we had a leak in the kitchen roof during a heavy rain storm. Hubbykins had to cut a hole in the ceiling and another smaller one in the wall to find out where the water was getting in and sort it out. Of course, after he fixed the leak, we were left with the holes in the ceiling and wall. Flippin' draughty they've been too!

Well, out of the blue the other evening, he fixed the hole in the ceiling. A quality job too.

He's Grrrreeeeaattt!!! Big Grin

Kidnapped!!!!

Or should that be dishwashernapped?

My dishwasher went in for repair under the guarantee early in February, I haven't seen it since! We only bought it in about September so if they keep going, they will have had it as long as we did. My guarantee is merrily running out while it sits in the repair shop too. Sad

The thing is... what can I do? I sent a very polite email to the repair shop enquiring about the welfare of my washer, but after that my hands are tied. If I get at all shirty with them they might decide to hang onto it for even longer, or kick it about? I don't know.

I think that when I do get it back, I'll be asking for a 'time credit' on my guarantee.

If this keeps up, I'll have to offer a reward for it's safe return and put up posters all over Caithness...

Have you seen this dishwasher??!!

Grrrrr...
